2010 Summer - Day 8 thru 10
Well we have learned that we need to be flexible and to expect the unexpected. When we arrived at the campground in Durango there was only one site that could accommodate us. After parking we discovered that the site was sloped and we could not level the coach. We were fortunate to find another campground, Mesa Verde RV Resort, which was not that far away and they had a long and level site. It is located right across from Mesa Verde National Park. Since this campground is centrally located for some of the attractions that we want to see, we decided not to relocate to the Moab campground on Friday and stay here through Monday the 13th.
After getting settled we went into Durango, which was founded in 1880 by the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad. It is an old cowboy town. There is even a staged "shoot out" in one of the saloon's each evening. We drove up US 550 toward Silverton and really enjoyed the scenic view. It was very cloudy which didn't help the photos.
The next day we decide to go to Four Corners Monument which is about 50 miles away. However, once we got about 8 miles away from Four Corners we saw a sign that said it was "CLOSED" for construction. Lesson learned - check next time before you drive there.
